In the fields of Kartli
A man caught and caged a quail
Along came a woman
She set it free again
'Woman, don't do this again
and I will let YOU go.'
In the fields of Kartli.

Go back, go back girl Kalino
Do not come along with me
Because at home there is high forest
You won't be able to pass it over
I will turn myself into falcon bird
And I will come by you again
I will pass over the forest, and come by you again
Forever yours I will be
Go back, go back girl Kalino
Do not come along with me
Because at home there is deep river
You won't be able to swim across it
I will turn myself into barbus fish
and I will come by you again
I will swim over the river, and come by you again
Forever yours I will be
Go back, go back girl Kalino
Do not come along with me
Because at home there is a beautful woman
And two or three little children
I will turn myself into black plague,
and I will come by you again
The woman I will kill, and look after the children
Forever yours I will be

Black raven, friend, why have you flown here from so far away?
Black raven—you have brought us a white hand with a ring on it!
I stepped out, I stepped out and I staggered onto the porch
For by the ring I recognized that it was my lover whose hand the raven had brought!
Ey! This hand is that of my darling, killed in the war!
He is killed, and lies unburied in a faraway foreign land.

"In 1956, in Pretoria, South Africa, Marta gave birth to this strong man.
Respect the womb of Marta. She gave birth to this strong man.
He was a strong man, he was fighting for his country."
Part of a longer work Bongani wrote for a competition of songs dedicated to Solomon Mahlangu, a 23-year old freedom fighter captured by police on his return from extended exile abroad. Mahlangu was tried and hung in 1979, symbolically on the anniversary of the creation of apartheid.
