Commonly sung at the end of concerts of traditional Corsican folk music, the original hymn was written in 1675. It was adopted as the national anthem of Corsica when the fledgling nation declared independence from Genoa in 1755. In 1767, the Genoese, despairing of ever being able to subjugate Corsica again, sold their claim to the Kingdom of France with the Treaty of Versailles. The French invaded Corsica that same year, and in May 1769, at the Battle of Ponte Novu, French control was consolidated over the island. In 1770 Corsica formally became a province of France.
lyrics
Diu vi salvi Regina / e madre universale
Per cui favor si sale / al paradisu
Voi siete gioia è risu/ di tutti i scunsulati
Di tutti i tribulati /unica speme
Voi da i nemici nostir / a noi date vittoria
E poi l'eterna gloria / in paradisu
God save you Queen, Mother of the universe, whose blessings will lead us to paradise
You bring joy and laughter to the disconsolate, to the unfortunate their sole faith
Come grant us victory over our enemies and then eternal glory in paradise
